The Burkburnett Shooting Range, located on State Highway 121 in Burkburnett, Texas is one of the oldest and most well-known shooting ranges in the state. The range began operations in 1906 as a hunting ground for game animals. It was enlarged to its current size in 1912 and became a public shooting ground. The range has been used by people of all ages since then, including the military and law enforcement. Today, the range is home to over 150 shooters from all over Texas and Arkansas. There are three floors of firing areas with a total length of . Other features of the range include 12 targets that can be shot at any angle, an eight-foot toucher target, a ten-foot bull's-eye target, and 11 practice lanes that allow shooters to condition their guns for various types of targets. Burkburnett is a small town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,065 at the 2000 census. Burkburnett is located on the border of Tarrant County and Collin County. The Burkburnett post office was established in 1881, and continued to serve until it was discontinued in 1955. The first settlers in what is now Burkburnett were John Dickson and his family who arrived from Tennessee in 1846. At that time there were no settlements within Tarrant or Collin Counties. The first house built in what is now Burkburnett was erected by James Collins on a farm he acquired near the present day intersection of US-183 and TX-277. James Collins had been born around 1795 near Huntsville, Alabama, son of General James Collins (1757-1836), one of the most prominent Texans during the 1800s. John Dickson bought land north of current day Burkburnett in 1875 for $3 per acre ($40 per km2). He started to grow corn and wheat here which became a mainstay local industry until after World War II when production began to shift towards other crops such as soybeans and cotton due to increased competition from those products from neighboring states. By 1950 only wheat remained grown here while corn production had decreased 95%. Burkburnett is a town in the US state of Texas, located about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Austin. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It became a city in 1978 and is the county seat of Williamson County. Burkburnett is named after Captain John Burkburnett, an early settler in what is now Burkburnett County. The first permanent European settlers arrived in what is now Williamson County on May 17, 1836 when Captain John Burk Burnett and his party journeyed from Louisiana to find new land for themselves and their families. They were joined by two other groups over the next year or so as more people arrived seeking rancho land in what would become Williamson County. The Burnett brothers founded a trading post near present-day Burbank in 1837 and developed some small farming settlements around it before building their own sawmill and gristmill on the lower Trinity River in 1840. In 1845 they built a larger mill on the north side of the river, which remains operational today as Dallas Mill & Grains Processing Company LLC . In 1850,Captain John Burnett married Sarah Mason who had come with him from Arkansas; they raised five children: James P., Sarah A., Thornton W., Lillie M., and Bertha N. Captain Burnett died at home on October 24, 1865 from natural causes following a hunting trip to central Mexico that he had been planning for months preceding his death. He was 80 years old at the time of his death. Sarah Burton Burnett continued living with her husband's family until they moved out to Longview in 1870 due to health concerns associated with living close to her husband's business activities alone during those times of stress caused by frontier life changes such as railroad construction nearby and political instability all around them during these difficult times. CaptainBurton's daughter Sarah Hester Burnett wrote an article about CaptianJohnBurntorton entitled "Cowboy Life Among Old Texans" published in 1974 by Longview Historical Society which can be found online at webpages/longviewhistory/.
