In 1930, the community had an estimated population of 100 and no businesses. By 2002, only 10 people lived there. John Burkburnett died in 1915 and is buried at Elmwood Cemetery. His wife Sarah also died in 1915 and is buried there with him. Their son John R. Burnett Jr., who also lived in Burkburnett until he moved to Midland Beach, Texas in 1951, is also buried there with them.

In 1840, Gideon Burkburnett married Sarah Wharton. They had six children: Samuel, Anna, Rebecca, James, Fannie and Mary. In 1849, the family moved toFayette County where they operated a farm until 1861 when they sold it to Captain Edward Waddell for $4,000. Captain Waddell gave the land to his son-in-law Jesse Grimes who cleared it and built a cabin on the property which he named after himself - Grimes Bluffs. It is said that Captain Waddell also donated some of the early iron ore that was used to build TX's infrastructure including roads and bridges. The Grimes Cabin still stands today and is open to visitors.
