Burkburnett is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,695 at the 2010 census. The Burkburnett post office closed in 2009. Burkburnett was founded on November 12, 1871 by James W. Burkburnett and his wife Lillie Mengersen. It originally consisted of just two families: the Burks and the Metzgers. In 1875, James W.'s father-in-law, Samuel Burcham moved to Burk Burnett from Wichita Falls and started a grocery store there that became an anchor for the community's growth. By 1901, the population of Burke Burnett had increased to 350 residents. In 1903, Lillie Burk Burnett married John Fenton and they began operating a general store with their children before moving it to what is now known as downtown Burk Burnett in 1907. They continued running the business until she died in 1958; he continued operation until 1959 before selling it to Jerald Hickey who operated it until 2003 when it reopened as The BURKSBURNET GAS STATION which still uses its original building today! The post office opened in 1889 under name of "Newport". It was renamed "Burke Burnett" on May 15, 1902 after James W., Jr., one of its first directors/owners; Mrs Jane Ewing (Burke) served as interim director from 1926 through 1931. On July 15, 1909 Dr Charles Aiken laid out streets plan for Burke Burnett; these streets are still present including Main Street which runs perpendicular to Center Street & forms a very wide loop around town center - this type of street pattern is unique in Texas! In 1928 Dr Charles Aiken donated land at Front & Greenwood Streets for a new school; this school has been called "Dr Charles Aiken Junior High School" ever since! First housed on various buildings used by various churches between 1929-1932 then housed within newer high school administration buildings between 1933-1940 finally relocated within current Administration Building circa 1990!! This building remains currently active!!!! A fire destroyed most of Burke Burnett on December 29th 1908; however all occupants were able to escape except 3 young boys who perished instantly due to smoke inhalation!!! This event forever changed BurrBurnett into something much different than when it first arrived!! For over 100 yearsburkenetians have commemorated this day every year with Festivities such as tradeshows/Christmas concerts etc...on or near Exactly date corresponding with Day Of Infamy!!!
