The name Burkburnett comes from Captain James Burkburney who explored and surveyed this area in 1814 during the Mexican-American War. The community was first established in 1881 when John Bigham bought land in what is now Burk Burnett Elementary School. Burbank Burnett Post Office opened on July 4, 1881. In 1912, J.C. Burkburney's farm and store were destroyed by fire; his insurance policy paid for both losses. In 1923, Burk Burnett Middle School was built and became the first high school in Texas to be stately with its white brick building designed by architect George Prentice Pease Jr.. It served as a model for all subsequent public schools in the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area until it closed in 2002 due to budget shortfalls and lack of interest from students or parents alike. He and his family came from Tennessee in 1849 and homesteaded land near present-day Amarillo in 1851. A store and blacksmith shop were built here in 1863 by Mr. Denton and his son James W., Sr.. In 1865, John Clements founded the community of Logansport west of present-day Burkburnetty along the Arkansas River. The name Logansport honord JohnClement who had come to this country from England as a young man about 1825 In 1902 Homan & Reeves platted a new town called Burk Burnett which became the nucleus for current day Burkburnett when they bought 6 acres (2 ha) northeast of Homan's original plat for $100 dollars In 1922 Clyde Iverson opened an all natural gas station/barbecue restaurant called Iverson's BBQ across the street from where today's Walmart sits Burk Burnett Post Office served residents until it closed on December 17, 1971 after serving its last mail on that date
