Burkburnett, Texas is a small town in the Panhandle of Texas that is located on the border of Comanche County and Wichita County. The population was 1,811 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Amarillo– TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now called Burkburnett was first settled by Germans in 1839. The name Burkburnett comes from "burch" meaning “haystack” and "burnett" meaning “advance” or “take hold of”. In 1845, Captain Robert Burnett established a ranch here and named it after his father-in-law, General James Burnett. The post office at Burkburnett was established on November 15, 1846, and served until it was discontinued on December 12th, 1907. In 1860, George Witherspoon founded an oil well near Burkburnett Creek which led to the establishment of Witherspoon Petroleum Company in 1865 which later became Texaco Incorporated. The settlement around this well grew rapidly due to its proximity to railroad transportation and natural gas interests in neighboring Comanche County. In 1900 there were only 10 dwellings in what is now Burkburnetown with a population of just over 100 people; by 1930 there were 4 churches (Anglican; Methodist; Baptist) 14 schools (5 high school grades through 8th grade; 6 middle/junior high grades through 9th grade), 2 businesses (a general store and a restaurant), 3 residences (1 cottage & 2 apartments), and 2 automobiles. After World War II many residents left for military service or other opportunities abroad but most returned home during the late 1960s thru early 1970s when oil prices began to rise causing many businesses to close including those mentioned above as well as two factories producing tires for American Motors Corporation plants overseas

Burkburnett, Texas is a small town located in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. The town was founded in 1872 by John Burkburnett and his family. The community was named for the burnished iron ore which was the mainstay of its economy. Burk Burnett began farming in the area in 1865 and soon became one of the most important landholders in the area. He served as mayor of Burk Burnett from 1893 to 1898, and as lieutenant governor from 1907 to 1912. In 1916, he sold his interest in the business to his son John W. Burnett Jr. WithburBurnett Elementary School opened its doors that year, followed by Burk Burnett Junior High School in 1924. However, it wasn't until 1966 that Burk Burnett Boulevard was officially renamed after him when it was changed from Paseo de la Reforma to this current name following an donation by his widow Alma Llewellyn Burnett. From 1922 until 1984, Burk Burnett Plaza housed a general store which also served as a post office and local bank. In 1990, however, this building underwent an extensive renovation which included adding new roofs and windows as well as updating its interior amenities including new restrooms and a gift shop/restaurant on site. The plaza reopened on November 16th 1990 with a concert by country music legends Willie Nelson and Joe Bonamassa at Ageen Park Stadium
