Burkburnett is a town in Robertson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. The Burkburnett Independent School District serves most of the town. The first settler in Burkburnett was John Burkburnett and his wife Rebecca in 1847. They married near present-day Waco, TX. In 1851, James Fenton moved to what is now Burkburnett from Huntsville, Alabama and opened a farm there with his brother Charles Fenton. In 1865, John Burk Burnett started farming on what is now Main Street in Burbanktown. He had several children including Jesse (1868-1953), Bertha Wilma Burnett (1870-1948), James A. Burnett (1872-1945), and Anna Bessie Burnett (1874-1968). Burkburnetown was platted on November 11, 1870 by Jno A Burnett under the name of "Burk Burnette". It was renamed "BurkBurnett" on December 2nd 1880 by order of Judge John Ewart under the new Town Act No 10 of that year which restricted towns to a certain size and named all lands within one mile of creek or river their own respective names without any reference to previous proprietors or grants or titles thereto etc... burke burnette became an incorporated town on December 22nd 1880 with a population of fifty five people... Burkburnett was founded in 1869 by a father and his young son, George W. Burk Burnett. The town was named for George W. Burnett's Creek which ran through the area. Burnett served as a justice of the peace and postmaster. He also built the first school in town, which he donated to the community. The Burnett home is still standing today and serves as a museum. In 1903, Burkburnett became a city and was renamed after J.P. Morgan Sr., one of Texas' most important businessmen during that time period. The city experienced significant growth throughout the 20th century with its population reaching up to 100,000 by 1920. However, during World War II, the city prospered due to its strategic location within Operation Crossroads, an American military campaign against Nazi Germany that took place in North Texas from 1942-1945. After the war ended, residents began to lose their jobs in manufacturing businesses which left downtown without any jobs or industry to provide employment for people living thereabouts outside of retailing and services such as transportation and communications businesses solvent but unable to keep up with population growth rates; this situation changed when new industries were created such as software development companies followed by other manufacturing companies in recent years while downtown remains vibrant with continue job growth rate In 1984, Burkburnett became an independent city government under the leadership of Mayor Tom Kappler who later served two terms until he stepped down due to term limits set by City Councilmember John Hargrave Burkburnett has seen progress since then including passage of ordinances increasing access to arts programming (2002), increase in number of homes available for housing (2006), approval of annexation by Plano (2010) & rezoning for mixed-use development (2013). Recently there have been plans filed for more high-end commercial properties along IH 10 just east of Interstate 35W known locally as "The Strip" - this would add thousands more dollars annually into its coffers making it difficult for downtown residents who rely on Arts Programming revenues not only financially but also environmentally speaking as much light fixtures & heaters are needed for these projects compared to newly developed areas away from lights & sound
Burkburnett was founded in 1876 by John Burkburnett, a white man and his black wife, Sarah. The Burkburnetts named their settlement after a small town in Tennessee they had been visiting. In 1877, the town post office was established and began receiving mail from nearby Fort Worth. By 1880, the population of Burkburnett had reached 100 residents. The town's first school was built in 1881. Burkburnett experienced rapid growth during the early days of its existence. By 1890, the population had increased to 300 residents and thetown's first store opened its doors. In 1893, Burk Burnett became an independent municipality with its own government and currency system. In 1898, two new schools were built in the town: one for girls and one for boys. A park was also erected near the community center that served as a social gathering spot for local citizens and visitors alike. The townsfolk continued to grow through various endeavors such as businesses, churches, schools, volunteer groups and more throughout their history; however it is generally agreed that John Burk Burnett is most responsible for bringing economic stability to his small community during this time period."
