Burkburnett began as a small settlement on the Brazos River near present-day Montgomeryville. In 1851, General John Burnett donated land to the town for $5 per acre ($!). The first school in town was built in 1852. The post office was established in 1858 and became known as Burkburnett until 1914. In 1865, some settlers (mainly Methodist Episcopalians) decided to name their new community after Admiral John Catesby Cook of HMS "Eagle" fame and USS "Athalia". However, no one can remember why Admiral Cook's name wasn't chosen for this community! In 1927 the general store burned down so the townspeople decided on using their own name again - Burkburnett! This time they lasted for 11 years before changing it back to Somervell County when another store opened up nearby with that name! Some believe that Burkburnett may have originated from an early settler's observation of a big fire burning by a creek outside of town limits: he thought it must be some kind of Indian encampment! There are several stories about how Burkburnet came to be named - one has it that a group of men rode out into the country seeking cattle and discovered what they thought were Indians camped around the creek; they called this spot "Burk Burnette". Another story has it that someone saw a big black bear browsing through fields near present-day FM 488 and decided to call this spot "Bog Burnett". We'll never know for sure which story is true but we do know that BurkBurnet stuck around for many years...and still does today!
