Burkburnett is a town in Potter County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area. Burkburnett is located on the Brazos River. The Burkburnett post office was established in 1892, and was discontinued in 1907. Burkburnett was first settled by Scots-Irish settlers in 1837. They named their community after Captain James Burk Burnett who had been killed during the Mexican–American War. In 1892, Captain Burnett's widow donated land to make up for his deathbed gift to her husband's family. The original home of the Burkburnett Settlement still stands on land that once housed the settlement today. The first school in Burkburnett was built in 1902 by Mrs. Lillie Hargrave and Mr. John O'Keefe with assistance from Mrs. John Witherspoon of Princeton Junction (now Arlington). The school held classes from kindergarten through eighth grade until 1956 when it became a junior high school under consolidation with nearby Richardson School District No 9 which closed its doors that year after only 8 years of operation due to budget cuts within DPSD #9 itself! In 1951 new administration moved into present day Administration Building #1 which replaced an earlier building on US Highway 287 just south of present day Administration Building #2 which served as Post Office & Store before becoming Schoolhouse Rock Elementary until 1975 when it merged with Richardson High School to form Richardson/Burkburnet ISD! From then until fairly recently there has been only one store - Lakeshore Hardware - inside Administration Building #1 though currently being renovated for use as a library! circa 2009 removed oldest two stories and added more than adequate classrooms adjacent to original Main Street basement) . For all practical purposes since 1957 Kenedy's Pharmacy has been our "new" Post Office !! All Hail Kenedy's !!

Burkburnett has been called "the little town that could" for its Prosperity Row development and its easy access to Interstate 645. Burkburnett started as a grassy knoll on the east side of FM 527 about 1876. A post office was established there in 1881, and by 1903, it had developed into a small town with a courthouse and several businesses including an oil refinery and grist mill. In 1911, Burkburnett united with neighboring Canadian Village to form Canadian Village-Burkburnett Township (later renamed Midland). In 1922, the first school opened in Burkburnet
Burkburnett was a small town in Texas until the early 20th century. It lies within the current city of Austin, and is today home to many fine businesses and cultural attractions. The community was founded by pioneers in 1839, after they discovered a salt marsh on the banks of the Trinity River. The area became an important cattle stop for ranchers in the 1840s, and Burbur Burnett Post Office was established in 1845. In 1851, Burkburnett incorporated as a town under the name of Burnet. By 1870, it had reached its peak population with over 1,000 residents. However, during the American Civil War, Burkburnett sided with Confederate forces and fell victim to Union military campaigns throughout much of Texas. As a result, most ofBurkburnett's buildings were destroyed or damaged during the war years. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, many local businesses reopened butBurkburnett declined as an agricultural center due to lack of land and competition from larger towns such as Austin. However, some new business enterprises began to emerge in Burbur Burnett at this time including a blacksmith shop and grocery store which remain operational to this day.
