Many Texans living west of Dallas fled to Arkansas before the war ended, but John and Maggie Burk Burnett stayed behind to raise their six children: four sons (Harry, Marshall (Jim), Tom) and two daughters (Margaret Alice & Nellie). Their home became known as "The Old House" due to its many years of occupancy until it was sold by John Burnett's daughter Nellie to Mrs.( unknown) in 1924. After World War II ended there were large numbers of German Americans moving into Texas because of the post-war boom in agriculture; some decided to move into Johnson County; however most chose to stay within their own communities such as Burkburnett where they formed tight intergenerational relationships that continue today. Today, many people who once lived here can still be found throughout Johnson County including through families clustered around Main Street/Burk Burnett Elementary School which has been home since 1954 when it opened as part of a larger school district consolidation process that saw all local schools consolidated into one facility which then became known as "Burk Burnett". There are also several churches located here including First Baptist Church (founded 1872), Christ Lutheran Church (1894), Burnt Hickory Presbyterian Church (1910), Knox Methodist Episcopal Church (1973) among others The first store on Main Street opened up shop on October 9th 1870 by Wm S Holmes under the name "New Market".
