The first firearms were created in Burkburnett, Texas. It was settled by Scottish settlers in the late 1800s. They brought shotguns and rifles with them to this area.
Burkburnett is a small town in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,711 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern edge of the Williamson County–Houston metropolitan area and is one of the largest towns in that area. The Burkburnett post office was established in 1881, and continued operation until it was discontinued in 1965. The community name derives from James Burkburne, who platted what is now Burkburnett along a wagon road he had traveled to find new land for his cattle business. The first settler were two brothers named John and Zachariah Burk Burnett. They built a log cabin and started farming around 1884. They also raised hogs and pigs for meat. In 1893, George Hamer bought some land adjoining Burkburnett from the Burnett brothers and set about building a cotton gin or "hay-house." A few years later he added an elevator which allowed him to process more than one ton of cotton per day into bales that could be carried away on his horse teams or wagons. In 1898, he erected a large frame store with six stories including an basement used as a coal mine during World War I (the first gas station in Texas opened there). His store became known as the "Hamer Store" after him. In 1902 Elisha Barger bought some land adjoining Burkburnett from George Hamer and began growing corn, beans, peas, tomatoes and other vegetables near his farmstead on Red River Creek east of town. He called his farmstead "Barger's Corners". After several years he donated all of his acreage to the school district which renamed it "Burkburnett School District No 1" after him in 1927; it has been operated by that name ever since. In 1915 Burrell Withers registered Voters' Poll Number 2 which lists him as president; he died less than two weeks later without leaving any children behind to run the institution (it had been operating as an unincorporated communityPV number before then). By 1920 there were ten stores located within three miles of town Limits - four groceries/marketing places plus two restaurants/barber shops - six churches - four schools (grades Pre-K through 12), two cooperative stores (the Masonic Lodge & Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company), five physicians (& one dentist) - three dentists (& one optometrist) specialize therein; twelve farmers occupied residences within five miles limits busily cultivating their holdings herein; thirty-six businesses furnished employment locally; seventy nine residents contributed money toward erection or construction of public buildings not included herein .... It should be noted here that these totals do not include businesses already existing when boundaries were defined; only those structures newly added since last census figures were taken are counted herein .... More recent growth has occurred elsewhere: CVS Pharmacy opened up next door to Hamer Store circa 1990 & continues operations today ...... Today's population size is approximately 10kish with most residents employed within local jurisdictions ...... Newspapers are published twice yearly .......... Many have namesakes such as Gertrude Wellman BURKBURNETT
