He named his land Burnt Land after he got it from the Mexican government for lands that had been ceded to them as part of the Treaty of San Antonio. In 1846, James Southerland and his family moved to what is now Burkburnett from Georgetown and founded a log cabin on the banks of the Brazos River. They were followed by other families over time until most of present day Williamson County was settled. In 1872, Hernando Reyes donated land east of present-day Burkburnett for a Methodist church which would be built on what would later be called Main Street. It became known as First Baptist Church before being renamed Cathedral Church when it became an Episcopal church in 1912. The current building was completed in 1907 and replaced an earlier structure that had burned down in 1896. As more people began moving into Williamson County, businesses opened up around Main Street including groceries, laundry services, dance halls, post office and doctor's office among others In 1922, Dollar General opened up shop on Main Street while Albertson's Grocery Store (now Kroger) opened up location next door in 1948 In 2007/2008 Intermountain Power Company purchased assets adjacent to Main Street from Trinity Resources Corporation forming Intermountain Power Company Ltd., which continues to operate under that name today withinterrupted service due to weather conditions

Burkburnett was founded by Captain James A. Burkburnett and his family on November 6, 1879, as a result of their popularity as farmers in nearby Cherokee Nation land. The first store in Burkburnett was located on Main Street and had six screens with a total seating capacity of ten people. In 1905, the first school opened in Burkburnett with twelve students from neighboring churches. In 1912, an addition to the school building allowed for classroom teaching and training for teachers throughout Medina County; this gave rise to what is now known as “Burk Burnett Teacher Training School” which remains open today as part of East Texas Community College System. In 1923, when it became apparent that oil would play a large role in Medina County's economy during the coming years, developers formed The Texas Company Limited Partnership to purchase 313 acres (1 km2) along Interstate 30 east of town and develop it into an oil field that would become one of the largest in America. The company built two pipelines and erected some sixty wells while also constructing twenty-six bridges over Clear Fork Creek – five miles wide at its widest point – providing access to both local residents and Texaco tankers sailing through Clear Fork Creek landing on Galveston Bay for refineries ashore on Houston Ship Channel. The oilfield production continued until 1984 when production was discontinued due to environmental concerns caused by Abandoned Well #5 located just south of town off FM 1718
Burkburnett was founded in 1836 by Captain James Burkburnett and his men of the brig "Pioneer". It became a town in 1843. The first post office was established at Burkburnett in 1845. The town grew rapidly, and by 1860 it had a population of 1,500. In 1865, the Texas Central Railroad arrived in Burkburnett, making it an important center for transportation. By 1870, the town had grown to 4,000 people. In 1907, Burkburnett had a school district and a library.
