Burkburnett is named after James Burkburnet, an early settler in what is now the town. The first post office in Burkburnett was established on November 1, 1872, by A. Hodge.[1] The name has been changed multiple times since then and currently stands as "Burk Burnette".[2][3] The current community was founded when a railroad line was built through what is now Burkburnett in 1881; it included land that would later become downtown Burkh Burnett. At its peak during World War II,Burk Burnetta had a population of over 10,000 people,[4] but today it remains a very rural community with just over 600 residents.[5] In 1951, two schools opened in Burkburnett: one for public school students and one for private school students. In 1967, another high school became available when Cypress Creek Junior High School moved from its original location to Huether Elementary School across from Walmart on Interstate 535 east of town center

In 1872, Captain Burnett donated land to the city of Fort Worth for public use. The city has used the land ever since. Burkburnett is now a part of Fort Worth City School District #1. The town of Burkburnett was originally named Ector after General James Ector who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became governor of Texas during Reconstruction (1868-1873). After that time, Ector's hometown began to be called Burkburnett because most people in town were from there at one point or another. The first school in Burkburnett was built in 1852 by Captain John Burnett Sr.. It was called Mrs Burrell's School until 1857 when it became known as First Baptist Church School which still exists today as an educational institution providing instruction through grades K-12th grade Captain John Burnett Sr.'s wife Martha served as principal until her death in 1860 Thereafter Master William Hogg took over teaching duties at Mrs Burrell's School until 1870 when he also passed away Eventually both Mr Hogg and Master William took turns as principals until finally Wm Ennis opened First Presbyterian School which continued operation until 1954 . In 1882 Mr Ennis sold his interest in First Presbyterian School to Dr Jno Coker who operated it under the name Burrrick Institute from 1902 until 1922 When Dr Coker sold it to Wm Laughlin he changed it back to Burrrick Institute which continues operations today
