Burkburnett, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 596 at the 2010 census. Burkburnett was founded in 1881 by pioneers of the Dakota Colony and named after Captain James W. Burkholder of the steamboat Missouri which arrived in 1876. The first post office in Burkburnett opened on November 15, 1881. It was renamed to its current name in 1907. The community's beginnings can be traced back to the early days of oil exploration near present-day Burkeville, Oklahoma when a group of men from Iowa organized a team to prospect for oil shale near present-day Burkburnett. They discovered rich oil shale fields and began construction of their own drilling rigs and wells at what is now known as "The Drilling Site." This initial effort led to an increase in business for the company and new jobs were created for local residents who worked on site. By 1912, even more businesses had been added to Burr Burnett"s eclectic mix," including general store, bakery, barbershop/beauty salon and banks: First National Bank (now part of Wells Fargo), American Loan Company (now JNB Holdings), Farmers Trust Company (later CitizensTrust) and First National Bank & Trust Company (now HSBC). In 1916–17 Captain James W. Burkholder donated land east of town along I-10 for use as a military airfield by the United States Air Force during World War I; this area became known as "Burk Burnett Field." After World War II ended, most businesses closed or moved out due to competition from younger towns within Hudspeth County such as Plano and Arlington Heights; however, one small business remained active until it closed shop in 1984 – Mrs. John Kuhn's Dairy products store – continuing operation until that time despite changes in ownership multiple times over the years including two moves inside city limits! In 2006 another small business - AARP Texaco - relocated from its original location across FM 1236 about 2 miles west of town - making Burkburnet one bigTexaco! Today there are few visible reminders that once large portions of Burke Burnett were used for oil production including wellheads remaining above ground just outside town limits today while all but one abandoned rig still stands offshore! One noticed reminder is a large number of pipelines passing through Burke Burnett – some running parallel with each other while others cross several times - providing clear evidence that this once bustling community handled massive volumes of petroleum product during its heyday!
