The early residents of Burketown did not have electricity until 1916 when an electric line was built between Alexandria and Vernonville along Elm Street; this finally connected all communities in Vernon County together with high school being established there that year as well as other public services such as fire protection and streetlights. In 1951, parts of Nueces County were merged into Galveston County to form Texas Tech University's rattlesnake campus zone adjacent to downtown Houston. As Tech grew larger and more numerous (it has since grown beyond the Rattlesnake Campus), so did its need for space - specifically land east of I-10 for expansion purposes only (the original intent had been to build an entire university on this property). So it was that in 1957 Burkburnett emerged as one of several towns within TXTU's new "campus city" boundaries - with its own independent police department and fire station(s). It would be another decade before all these amenities truly arrived: after all, initial development took place on land much closer to I-10... Finally completed just before Christmas 2006,...

The Burkburnetts operated a general store and log cabin until they reached their death in 1907. In 1916, the town received its first post office.
