Bryan, Texas is a city in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 731 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Tarrant County. Bryan was founded on November 3, 1879 by John Chisholm and his brother-in-law James A. Baird as a town named after Chisholm's victory in the Battle of Bannockburn in 1714. The name "Bryan" means "place where the Bear lives." The first post office was established in 1881, and the city charter was adopted on December 5, 1886. On February 14, 1907 an oil well located near present day downtown Bryan reached its full production capacity and began selling crude oil to local residents for $1 per barrel; this made Bryan one of the earliest American cities to experience a period of sustained economic growth. In 1914 Mayor Laddie Hinton presented City Manager Harry White with a set of plans for renovating Bryan Municipal Building which included expanding sidewalks and planting trees on Main Street between Second and Third Streets; these plans were implemented and soon saw increased business activity due to new tourist attractions such as Lake Travis reservoir. In 1934 two brothers – Jack Waugh (left) and Clarence Waugh (right) – openedTexaco service stations along I-35W from Flores Road south to Interstate 35E east in what is now Midtown Bryan just north of US Highway 287/US Highway 115A (the current I-135W/I-635E). This initiated what would become known as “The Dallas Way” corridor that still runs through downtown Bryan today
