In 1839, land was acquired for a courthouse and school by John Hancey and James Robertson, two merchants from Midland City, Texas. The first store opened in downtown Bryan in 1840. A post office was founded here in 1851 by Jno. Hancey and Wm. Mizey, both natives of Ohio. In 1865, Emanuel Axtell donated land to form what became the east side of town which included present day Bryan Hall Road and State Street; this donation made possible the erection of the current courthouse which stood on that site until it burned down in 1902 In 1907, Hugh McLennan donated over 100 acres (40 ha) to create an agricultural park that would include a blacksmith shop and cotton gin as well as other commercial buildings such as a grocery store and flour mill In 1915 local businessman Laughlin Dye founded his own paper company here which became one of the largest paper companies in America Dyne Paper Company closed its doors around 1980 but left behind many legacy products including Post Office Blue - now known as Lone Star stamps
