In May of 1865, a group of Texas Rangers led by Captain John B. Maginnis placed an order for twenty-four rifles from Holland & Zeeman. The rifle was to be used as part of the Ranger unit's new secret mission, which was to scout out the Mexican Railroad in order to prevent its construction. In November of 1865, the Rangers received their rifles and were ordered to start their secret mission. On December 1st, 1865, Captain Maginnis sent a detachment led by Lieutenant Harry Lee back into Mexico City in order to purchase munitions for the Ranger unit and assess any potential threats that could exist along the railroad. On December 3rd, Lieutenant Lee returned with news that he had found two men who were working on the railroad and they should not be trusted because they knew too much about the project. The Rangers decided that it would be safer to send one man ahead of them in case they ran into trouble and waited until January 2nd in order to resume their secret mission. On January 5th, Lieutenant Lee reported back that he had seen three people walking down what turned out to be a tunnel leading underneath the Mexican Railroad. He concluded that these people were probably involved with building the railroad so he recommended sending another detachment lead by Captain John Burchfield in order to investigate further. While this second detachment was traveling down the tunnel, they stopped suddenly due to an incoming party of Mexicans who fired upon them forcing them back upgradient where they discovered several barrels filled with explosives hidden among some rocks nearby. After ascertaining that these barrels did not belong to either side and being unable find any other evidence linking anyone involved with building or using explosives within Mexico City Limits (i.e., Bryan),Captain Burchfield decided against detonating any explosives and his detachment continued traveling downgraded tunnel instead opting for caution before finally reaching their destination just outside of town limits on January 8th 1866 having discovered no viable evidence linking anyone involved with either side with Explosives use orbuilding on Mexican Railroad...
Bryan, Texas is located in Hudspeth County and has a population of over 28,000. The city was founded on July 1, 1846 by Colonel James Connally and his brother-in-law, Sam Houston. Bryan's sister city is Uptown, Dallas. The current mayor of Bryan is Richard M. Daley. The first post office in Bryan was established on July 1, 1846. At the time it had a population of only 10 people. In 1851 the post office became the county seat and continued to serve that role until 1889 when it became the city proper. On November 15, 1907 City Council voted to annex unincorporated areas east of Interstate 35 which included present day Spring Branch and parts of present day Tomball and Humble. This annexation created what is now known as Plano Township which also included much of Humble County including Clearwater and portions of Spring Branch Ranch
