Bryan, Texas is a town in Chihuahua County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,873 at the 2010 census. The name Bryan comes from French for "Bayou de la Rivière". The town was founded by Stephen F. Austin in 1821 and named for him. It became a county seat in 1868. The first post office in Bryan opened on November 7, 1825. In 1827, the first courthouse and jail were built in the town. In 1830, the first school was established in Bryan. From 1840 to 1850, Brazos River passed through Bryan and its surroundings making it an agricultural center with cotton plantations being developed along the riverbank. In 1865-1866, Baylor University located its first campus within what is now downtown Bryan; this led to the establishment of college towns throughout Texas as Baylor expanded its operations statewide and beyond into other states (e.g., New Mexico). In 1915-1920 two oil refineries were built near present day downtown Bryan; these helped to spur growth around downtown and Stimsonville (the older part of downtown).
