It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area and is located on the Edwards Plateau near Austin's core. Bryan is also known for its oil reserves. The first written mention of Bryan was in 1827 when it was noted as an Indian village called Taos. In 1848, Captain James Fenton discovered oil well at Buffalo Bayou which led to development around this locality and other areas in central Texas. The first wells were drilled by pipeline in 1860-1861 from natural gas fields found near Lubbock toDallas/Fort Worth urban areas and then to Houston (the "Saudi Arabian Axis"). The original name for Bryan was "Beaumont". It reverted back to its original name after a referendum held in 1903; residents voted 54% in favor of returning the city's name to Beaumont but 36% opposed it because they felt that it sounded too Americanized. In 1907, Bryan became one of thirty-six cities included within the new Dallas metropolitan area when Dallas County was created from parts of Travis and Wise counties. The City Council decided to change their name back to Beaumont following a request from Mayor Geo Meeks who felt that it would sound more European sounding than Dallas County's Trinity County had done before them. Bryan experienced rapid growth during World War II with an estimated 20 percent increase in population due largely to the war effort; many businesses closed during this time as soldiers returned home or went into civilian employment elsewhere within TX or nationally. One business that did not close however was JCPenney which still occupies its building at 12th and Lamar Streets today despite having been vacated by employees for over twenty years prior thereto! After World War II ended, economic stagnation characterized much of Brazoria County until the late 1960s when large numbers began moving into Bryan seeking new opportunities as petroleum production increased exponentially throughout North Texas due primarily to DAPL operations - activity that has continued unabated ever since!
