Bryan is located on the Brazos River and its namesake river. Bryan was founded in 1871 by settlers from Illinois. The first post office in Bryan was established on December 12, 1871, and it closed on July 1, 1975. The current post office opened on November 2, 1984. In 1871, a man named George Hinton settled land near present-day Bryan with his family. In 1876 Hinton built a log cabin that still stands today as the basis for present-day downtown Bryan. On February 22nd of that year he married Lillie Beeson and they started raising crops and selling goods back to their customers until October when they moved to Dallas because there were no railroad tracks close to their farmstead. They returned home two months later after learning about the construction of the Texas Central Railroad through Hudspeth County and decided to stay put and start again from scratch in what would become their new home town of Bryan (now called Denton). They raised cotton until 1895 when an Act of Congress made agrarian land ownership illegal which ended all cotton acreage holdings in Texas for over 60 years! This act also created discrimination against African Americans as well since whites could now own large areas without having to laboriously cultivate it themselves! After ten years living & working here they founded Anaconda Copper Mines (now known as Century Minerals) in 1903 with $5 million dollars loaned by US Steel Corporation head David Rockefeller! From here on out this small agricultural village prospered becoming one of America's leading mining communities! Today many businesses locate within walking distance Of Downtown Bryan including: Anaconda Copper Mines (headquartered downtown), Century Minerals (closeby), Medical Marijuana Inc., Flower Mound Casino Resort & Resort (just across I-10 from downtown), Magnolia Petroleum refinery - operations ceased due to environmental concerns but assets are still used by refiners Gulf Stream EnergySouthwest LLC & Marathon Oil Corp., etc... There are numerous restaurants scattered throughout Downtown Bryan like Joe's BBQ ribs & tacos ($8), Chateau Steakhouse ($28+, Worth checking out!), Longhorn Steak House ($)$$$, Roy's Cafe ($)$++%, etc... Most notable for visitors are two major tourist attractions - The University of Houston main campus located just east of Downtown Bryan off I-10 minutes away from most hotels/restaurants or UT Austin’s Samuel Adams Brewery - 3 blocks west along Gonzales Street off Interstate 35W just outside Research Park TX Bryan also has several smaller towns nearby such as Weatherford which lies just north of Interstate 10 exit #64; Mount Pleasant which straddles Interstate 10 between I-35W and FM 1492 south of downtown; Westwood which is east OF FM 1492 off I-10 adjacent to University Park; Gainesville which straddles FM 925 between Lake Travis Rd./US Highway 290E/Texas State Highway 183N&FM 530 south of downtown; Springdale which straddles US Highway 290E between SR 620 N&US Highway 290W southeast+of Jourdan Rd./University Dr.; WintersetTEOCenter - primary business activity being manufacturing electronic products under various brands name(s) such as Apple®, Dell®, HP®, IBM® etc.; Clearwater Bobcats basketball team who play their games at Clearwater International Airport less than one mile away
