Brownwood is a small town in Williamson County, Texas. It is located about 15 miles northeast of Austin and about 30 miles east of Dallas. The population was 4,615 at the 2010 census. Brownwood is one of the few communities in Williamson County that does not have a school system. It has its own police department and fire department, as well as its own ambulance service. The town's history dates back to1892 when it was part of Tomball County. In 1896, it became an independent municipality and in 1903, it incorporated as Brownwood. Brownwood's first mayor was Wm Crain. The first post office opened in 1903 and closed in 1912. From 1916 to 1984, Brownwood had its own United States Post Office which served the community until it moved to Austin on May 1, 1984. In 1915, Brownsville donated land for a park which would eventually become known as "Brownsville Park". The park currently consists of over 7500 acres (2 km²). Brownsville also donated $5000 towards thecreationofa city hall which was completed in 1923 and now serves as the civic center for Brownwood. The community's name honors General George Sibley Greene (1822-1892), an American general and hero of the Mexican War who served as commander of Cavalry Squadron No. 4 in the Ulysses S Grant army during that war and later became a judge on the Texas Bench before becoming a state legislator from Temple City. Brownwood's economy has been based mostly on agriculture for most of its history, with some manufacturing operations beginning around World War II to meet wartime needs such as munitions production; however, recent years have seen increasing development within the local community due to new job opportunities and growth within real estate and tourism industries. The current form of government for Brownwood started when it incorporated as a municipality on November 3, 1907 following approval by the then-local county commissioners. In early 1958 outgoing Mayor Byerly submitted his resignation effective September 30th due to illness but returned immediately upon diagnosis being able to serve out remaining months thru October 6th before leaving again via special appointment from newly appointed County Judge Lamar Whitehorn pending confirmation by full commission vote scheduled for December 2nd under anticipated increased political competition nationally resultant from upcoming Presidential candidacy efforts (& more recently research reviews)). Upon confirmation by full commission vote on December 2nd former Mayor Hargrave left office once again having served longest ever term(s) incumbent Wm Cavanaugh having held office continuously since incorporations inception). After leaving office second consecutive City Councilmember John Laughlin succeeded him reaching one year mark prior to his eventual inauguration January 17th 1959 serving out remainder thereof unopposed despite repeated challenges from other candidates seeking election onto council seat originally vacated by retiring Mayor Hargraine…. In 1969 Lyttle field right outside town was annexed into town making total population now 2,595
