Brownwood is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas, located in the Houston metropolitan area. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census and 6,531 as of 2018. It is part of the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land Combined Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1881 by two men named Brown and Wright. The name comes from an early settler's farmstead called Brownwood Plantation which sat on a large piece of forest land west of town. In 1883, John Hickey bought the farm from Brown and Wright and renamed it Hickey Manor after himself and his brother-in-law, James Mclntyre Hickey. By 1907, most of the original settlers had died or moved away, but some new families arrived including Mrs. Lillie Willingham who erected a log cabin on her property that still stands today. The first post office was established in 1909 with Wm Dutton as president and Mrs. Willingham as secretary/treasurer./ cashier./ In 1911, Mr. Dutton donated land to build what would become Brownsburg Elementary School; this school served until 1955 when it became part of Magnolia Elementary School which then merged into Houston ISD before being reorganized into its present format in 2014 Brownsburg is also home to one Of America's oldest shopping malls - Fairway Plaza - that opened in 1962 with anchor stores Sears & Kmart . This mall once had over 150 tenants including Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney & Co., Macy's Inc., Lord & Taylor Inc., American Eagle Outfitters (AEO) and Sears Neiman Marcus Department Store among others before becoming vacant in 2001 In recent years, Brownwood has seen steady growth with several new businesses opening up such as ABI Foods , AT&T MobilityCorp.'s Harris County wireless division , First Colony Credit Union (FCCU) - which reopened its doors after being closed for many years - along with restaurants like Chick-fil-A , Chili’s Grill And Bar / El Paso Mexican Restaurant and Ruby Tuesday . Brownwood has several notable architectural features including two churches - First Baptist Church (1876) and Second Baptist Church (1910), as well as three schools - Grady Elementary School (1896), White Settlement School (1911), and Hargrave Elementary School (1946). Brownwood was founded by the Denton family in 1874. The town grew quickly, and by 1888 it had a population of over 1,500. In 1912, Brownwood changed its name to Amarillo and became an independent city.
