Bechtel donated a building at 10th and Elm to the Brownwood School District for use as an school library and science lab. In 1927, the Bechtels donated another building on 11th Street to the school district for use as a math and science wing. At this point in time, there were four buildings located in Brownwood that housed various areas of optical equipment sales and research interests by local scientists and educators from all over Texas! In 1945, The Optical Emporium changed hands once again when it was sold to Harry Wainwright Jr., who reopened it as Wainwright's Optics within two years with his son-in-law Gordon Latham as Manager/Owner/President (1946-1951). Here at Wainwright's Optics, we continued selling optical products until our final sale in 1978 to David Brinkerhoff who had purchased it from Gordon Latham. From 1978-1980, David Brinkerhoff ran the business under the name "Optical Industries Inc." before changing ownership again (again) in 1984 to become finally known as Brownwood Retail Partners II Corporation until its closure in 1992 due to financial issues. It is interesting to note that even though these businesses have been through many changes over time, their core mission has always been the sale of high quality optical products worldwide including those made here locally inBrownwood!
