Brownwood was founded by pioneers in 1867 as a stop on the Chisholm Trail. The history of Brownwood begins with settlers who set out from Fort Worth in 1867 to find new land for themselves and their families. A few weeks after landing at what is now known as Pointblank Marina, they discovered that there were no other settlements nearby except for one small post office called "BrownWOOD." They named their new settlement after Major General George Crockett's ranch where he had been living since he left Texas for Mexico in 1848. After some debate among the founding fathers about whether or not to name their new community after one of America's most famous leaders, eventual decision was made to name it "BrownWOOD" because it was thought that this would be an auspicious site for growth given the views looking out onto Buffalo Bayou (now Loop 1604). The first inhabitants of BrownsWood were men who had come overland from Midland County on horseback or wagon trains. Most people who settled here did so because they wanted to challenge Spanish rule within Texas and build up resistance against Mexican authorities near present-day Ciudad Juárez de México. As time passed though, many Texans decided that BrownsWood would be more comfortable if they built homes closer to civilization instead of scattered around nature like they did back then on open country roadsides waiting for travelers to pass by them again someday soon. Many pioneer women also moved into BrownsWood during this time; many women worked as cooks and housewives while husbands took up farming or other pursuits outside of home due to lack of available land inside Ofallon County at the time[1]. Brownwood, Texas is a small town located in Williamson County, Texas. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. The community was named for General James Brown and his Creek band of Horseback- riders from Kentucky who arrived in 1827. Brownwood grew up around the old post office on High Street which still exists and is currently used as a commercial center. The first school in town was built in 1875 and the first white child born in the town was Isabella Earle who was born to English parents in 1881. Brownwood has been home to many farmers, ranchers, and business people over the years including John Hogg (founder of Hoggs Ground Feeding), Roy Thomson (founder of Thomson Broadcasting Company), Wanda McCrary (wife of Republican Governor Rick Perry), and more recently Dr. David J. Levy (chief operating officer of Trinity Health). The history of Brownwood goes back to 1827 when General James Brown set out with his Creek band of horseback riders from Kentucky to find new land west of Houston. When they reached what is now West Branch county, they camped for a week near present day Brownsville before moving on to Allen Bridge where they founded what would become known as "Brown Wood". In 1830, General James Brown's son George moved from Brownsville to take possession of some property northeast of present day Greenville on what is now called Old Hickory Hill Road which he named after his father's old friend Colonel Henderson Hickory who had helped him purchase land east of Houston for that purpose. Colonel Henderson Hickory donated most or all of the present-day property including much that still stands today including River Oaks Cemetery which is also one of Greenville's earliest burial grounds. A number of other residents followed suit over time such as Captain John Workman who donated land along Main Street between White Oak Lane and Springdale Drive; Alexander Polkwho donated land southwest thereof between Slaughter Road and McCullough Rd.; Jonas Paulsen who donated land east thereof between Slaughter Road and FM 1960; Jacob Hecht whose Donation Of Land On East Prairie road gave rise To Hecht's School & Hospital; Elijah Stroud whose Donation Of Land On Goodloe Lane Gave Rise To Stout Middle School Today In 1830 alone, local landowners donated over 6 acres total to build schools, churches, stores etc., making it one OF THE FIRST COMMUNITIES TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE EDUCATION OF THEIR COWBOY LANDLORD KIDS!
