It was founded on July 3, 1878, by squatters from Wichita Falls, Texas who arrived on horseback to provide labor for the new railroad construction project. The company also operates an RV park serving nearly 2,000 guests annually. In addition to its retail stores and RV park, Brownwood has a library which opened in 1951 and offers classes in history, government, economics and other subjects as well as books for sale on shelves inside and outside the building. One of Brownwood's most notable landmark buildings is Baptist Church which dates back to 1907 when it was first built on land donated by Drury Lumber Company president Jameson Hogg Jr.. The church became home to one of Amarillo's first post offices until it closed due to lack of mail volumes in 1971 after receivinghelp from Texaco gas stations across west Texas during that time period vernacular architecture characterized much of local civic buildings until about 1970s when many began using Moderne style brick or concrete structures popularized by Dallas/Fort Worth metropolitan areas during this time period

The original mission of the community was “the promotion of education through open-air worship” but this goal has been largely replaced by economic development and social programs. Brownwood is located at (30.528491, -97.665674). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2010, there were 1,521 people residing in the town. Of these, 817 (83%) were white alone, 178 (15%) were black or African American alone, 5 (5%) were hispanic or Latino of any race, and 5 (5%)were Asian or Pacific Islander alone; 0% lived below poverty line. As of 2000 census data estimate that only 9%of Webb County residents are below poverty line.
Brownwood, Texas was founded by settlers in 1836. The area that is now Brownwood was a part of the Mexican Land grants program. In 1836, the U.S. government gave out 2,500 acre parcels to American citizens who would settle in what is now Brazoria County and Hidalgo County. The land was mostly swampy and covered with trees, so development was slow until white men discovered oil shale near the town of Vernon in 1907. Businesses started to boom as people discovered oil reserves that could be tapped for income and energy independence.
