Brownwood, Texas is a town in Uvalde County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. Brownwood was founded in 1881 by John A. Brown and his family as a dry goods store on what is now FM 620 near the present day Brownsville-Roswell Highway. The town grew slowly until it became an agricultural center with many cotton plantations and other land holdings in the early 20th century. By 1930, brownwood had over 100 businesses and 1,500 residents. The local cotton industry ended during World War II as demand for wartime materials plummeted; but post-war growth has been rapid with nearly 2,000 people employed in manufacturing since 2000. The community experienced a period of revitalization beginning in the late 1990s when state lawmakers passed legislation authorizing new development within its boundaries including the construction of two high schools and multiple apartments and retail developments around FM 620/SR 825 (now I-10 East). These changes led to increased economic activity which has helped spur redevelopment of downtown areas such as Main Street which has seen a recent resurgence in commercial development and more efficient transportation options available than when Brownwood first emerged as an important regional center decades ago. Brownwood currently enjoys strong support from both elected officials and business leaders who continue to make significant investments into keep it vibrancy booster while also providing opportunities for citizens to engage their local government through politics, public service or activism
