Brownwood, Texas is a small town located in south-central Texas. The population was 2,814 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. Brownwood is a community rich in history and culture that has seen many changes over the years. The first settlers to the area were soldiers who fought for Mexico during the Mexican-American War. They brought their families with them and began to live in what is now known as Brownsville. In 1874, they built a log cabin on Rancho San Antonio de Padua, which still stands today. The first post office was established in Brownwood in 1880. From then until 1907, it was called Falfurrias Creek Post Office. In 1902, an election was held to select a board of trustees for the new school district that would be formed by combining two earlier districts: Hanover and Spring Branch Schools were each given a 1/2 vote against approval but received because they were adjacent to one another at Texan Road and Cypress Avenue (now I-10). The trustees met on October 11th and approved annexation of Spring Branch School into Brownwood’s school district; this occurred after much protest from residents who felt that their schools should have been allowed to remain separate! Brownwood’s first store opened its doors in 1911 when JW Waddell established his grocery store here on Flores Street near present day University Boulevard (then FM 1960). Mr. Waddell became proprietor of the store until his death in 1938 when it passed onto his son John Waddell Jr., who continued operations until 1977 under various names including JW Enterprises Inc., World Market Place Inc., etc.. In 1978, John Waddell Jr.'s family sold the business to Texaco for $3 million dollars making Brownwood one ofTexaco's largest refinery towns ever!
