Brownsville is a city in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 14,819 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Medina County. The name Brownsville is derived from Spanish for "place where the brown hogs are." The first settlers to Brownsville were José and Jerusha de la Garza who arrived in 1836. Brownsville was founded on July 16, 1854 by Colonel James Fayette Taylor as the site of a military post called Fort Brown. In 1860, it became part of the Mexican Republic through an act of Congress passed under President Andrew Johnson. In 1872, construction began on what would become known as the Pacific Railroad Bridge over Rio Grande River near present-day downtown Brownsville. It took until 1888 for that bridge to be completed andnamed after General John Pemberton Caldwell II who had played a key role in negotiating the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended Mexico's war with America. On November 15th 1886 Mayor Francisco Ramos announced plans to rename downtown Brownsville "Pemberton Square" in honor of General John Pemberton Caldwell II following his death two years earlier at age 54 from a heart attack while serving as governor of New Mexico during Reconstruction days; he was buried at Arlington National Cemetery but his remains have not been seen there since his death. On December 5th 1889 located just east ofpresent-day Downtown Brownsburghe Ulysses S Grant Presidential Library and Museum opened its doors after more than two years effort by local citizens and leaders including Mayor Francisco Ramos and Congressman Charles Wickersham Barnes (R-Texarkana) majority leader in the Houseof Representatives; later that year City Clerk Nellie Ahern established office hours 9am to 4pm Monday through Friday inside municipal building adjacent to courthouse square; this allowed additional resident accessto library resources without having to leave their homes). At present time Public Housing Authority housing projects have replaced most original buildings within city limits date back to 1915 when public housing authority was created as part of Federal land acquisition program following World War I boom; prior thereto all dwellings within city limits were privately owned or rented from family members & friends).
