Brownsville is a small town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. Brownsville is located on the banks of the Rio Grande River and comprises part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first European to visit this area was Francisco Enriquez de la Cosa in 1541 during his expedition exploring what is now Nuevo León Province. In 1834, James Kenedy founded the present day town of Brownsville on land granted him by President Andrew Jackson. It was named after General John Brown's raid on Mexico City in 1836 that led to the American Civil War. Brownsville began as a small Mexican village known as San José del Rio Agrio On January 24, 1861, Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston ordered Major General Braxton Bragg's division of Confederate troops to move from Tyler to Brownstown (now Mission Terrace), about twelve miles east of Brownsville where he had prepared for an attack against Johnston's army under Lieutenant Colonel George Hill. Unbeknownst to Johnston or Bragg, Union forces were moving upriver from Austin and had anticipated their movements. When Confederate troops reached Brownstown they found Union units entrenched along both banks of the river opposite them across a narrow opening referred to as "the Gap". A skirmish ensued which resulted in one Union soldier dead and six Confederates wounded; however, no flag was raised or any battle fought. The Battle of Brownstown was another minor engagement in an otherwise successful march by Johnston's army downriver towards Houston that evening. The town got its start when James Kenedy founded it on December 17th 1834 while serving as lieutenant colonel with Company I Ulysses S Grant’s 3rd Cavalry Regiment at Tomball Creek near present day Cedar Park University Campus south side lot 317 though nothing ever happened until 1865 when locals started ranches there then they name it Brownsville
