Brownsville, Texas is a town in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 12,866 at the 2010 census. Brownsville is located on the Rio Grande River. It is bordered by Laredo to the north and east, San Antonio to the south and west, and Midland to the northwest. The first permanent settlement in what is now Brownsville was made on April 6, 1836 when Frenchmen named it "Bourg d'Italia." A post office called Bourg d'Italia was established in 1839, but it failed to take off and was discontinued in 1841. A smallpox epidemic that year killed many of the small farmers near Brownsville. In 1842 Brazoria County was formed from parts of Cameron and Tarrant counties; Brownsville became part of Brazoria County. On October 15, 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell attacked Fort Sam Houston southeast of present-day Brownsville with 1,500 men under Lieutenant Colonel John Sibley during Battle of Palo Alto Bridge. After overwhelming Union forces under Brigadier General James Longstreet reached Fort Hood about three miles (5 km) northeast of today's city limits about noon on October 16th 1861 (the day after Lincoln’s inauguration), Ewell withdrew his army towards Corpus Christi before nightfall due to heavy Union artillery fire across Palo Alto Creek which threatened his supply line running into Fort Hood. Mexican troops were already occupying much of East Texas before this battle because President Abraham Lincoln had approved their entry into Mexico as part of a peace effort following US-Mexican War battles such as Buena Vista Heights and Monterrey Rosella. In today’s city limits there still stands an old fortification built by American soldiers during World War II known as “Fort Sam Houston Park” which served as a training ground for Texan Rangers until 1963 when it reverted back to its original name: “Fort Brown” park honors Brown County sheriff James Meeks who died in a car accident while driving there in 1951 aged 54 years old however most visitors only visit one side or approach from behind looking out over Interstate 10 just outside current downtown boundaries
