Brownsville is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, and home to the Brownsville Naval Air Station. The city was founded by Commandant Seymour Brown in 1896 as an airfield on the Texan mainland. Brownsville is a city in Brownsville County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,055 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Brownsville County. The first permanent settler in what would become Brownsville was José Leal y Argote on November 24, 1836. He and his family founded the town on a rancho grant that he had obtained from General Antonio López de Santa Anna. On December 6, 1836, the Mexican–American War ended when General Sam Houston's army crushed an assault by Mexican forces against his outpost at San Jacinto Rancho el Buenavista just outside of Brownsville. From this victory Houston became president of Mexico and repulsed all requests for Texan assistance during the Mexican–American War. In 1847 Gadsden Purchase land was bought from Manuel Micheltorena for $5,000 dollars and Developer James Fenton laid out streets and built homes in what would become Brownsville. In 1849 José Moreno founded the mission of San Juan Bautista de los Olivos en honor of Saint John Bosco with intentions to convert Indians to Christianity as part of a larger effort to drive them away from their traditional hunting grounds in present-day Matamoros Municipality east of Brownsville into reservations within present-day Monterrey Municipality west of Brownsville where they could be used for grazing purposes only. From this small settlement growth ensued as people began farming rice, cattle raising and other crops while Methodist Reverend David Waddell conducted religious services using open air meetings at various locations around town until 1850 when construction began on the current downtown square which included churches (First Baptist), physician Dr George Epps (1851-1927), engineer Lorenzo Martinez (1853-1911) and post office (1856). In 1860 Englishman John McMurtry arrived with his wife Mary McMurtry to purchase 825 acres (300 ha) southeast of town along Buffalo Bayou for $10 per acre ($4 ha per km²). They named their new community after him - McMurray Heights - but it never took off as planned due to lack of development or interest from settlers or developers. In 1865 Major Tom McLaws organized a militia unit known as "The Texans" which served under Confederate General Joseph Johnston during operations against Fort Sumter in South Carolina; this event is often cited as starting the US Civil War process in Texas. On October 10, 1865 Union troops burned down McLaws' home nearpresent day Trinity University Drive NW before retreating back across Buffalo Bayou towards Richmondtown Mission just northwest of town undeploying any military forces involved in what came to be known as “the battle at BrownsVILLE” although no physical evidence exists confirming these claims today! By 1870 most residents had either moved away or were killed during wars with Mexico or Confederates including José Moreno who also died that year at age 83 years old from natural causes unknown today however legend has it that he was poisoned by local Indian traders Notes: According to local folklore some early settlers may have been exposed to Spanish measles via contact with Native Americans living near them while traveling through those areas
