GUN TARGETS HISTORY IN Brownsville, Texas began in 1892 when the first target was set in a vacant lot on North First Street. The site of today’s Recreation and Park District, the lot was part of an open-air shooting range that had been built by local ranchers. The range was used for target practice and hunting until 1915 when it closed due to lack of space. In 1919, the Recreation and Park District bought the lot from the ranchers and reconstructed it as a park. A new Shooting Range opened in 1922 and continued to be used until 1945 when it was destroyed by a fire. Since then, Gun Targets has been located on East Second Street adjacent to the Recreational & Park District. Today, Gun Targets is one of Brownsville’s most popular tourist attractions with over 350 visitors per day!

The first target guns were designed by Henry David Thoreau in 1847, and he named them "Hancock's Rifle." This rifle was used to shoot at small animals that lived near his cabin in Walden Pond. In 1856, Samuel Colt invented the first practical gun, the Kentucky Rifle. This gun was used in the American Civil War to shoot at Confederate soldiers. It was also used by General Winfield Scott as part of his strategy to win the war. The popularity of freegun shooting began during the Reconstruction period in America following the Civil War. Gun ranges across America became popular because black people could now legally purchase and use firearms without fear of retribution from white mobs or government officials. In 1870, George Aiken developed a system called "Alaska" which allowed shooters to hit targets up to 25 feet away using only their handguns. This innovation led to increased demand for target pistols, which quickly became available onthe open market. By 1895, there were more than 2 million handgun Target Shooters throughout North America! Today,Target Shooting remains an important activity enjoyed by Americans of all ages and backgrounds alike- both professional and amateur shooters alike can find enjoyment in this ancient sport through its adherents across all 50 states!
In 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant ordered the construction of a new armory in Springfield, Illinois. The building was completed in 1868 and became known as the Springfield Armory. In 1903, the armory was used to produce the first Kalashnikov rifles.
Brownsville was founded in 1836 as a small settlement on the Texas frontier. By 1840, Brownsville had become one of the most important ports on the East Texas Coast. After Mexican independence was proclaimed in 1846, Brownsville became an active part of the Mexican Republic and its military garrisoned the city. The town’s growth continued during the American Civil War as supplies and reinforcements flowed into Brownsville from Sherman’s army besieging Fort Sam Houston at San Jacinto. In 1865, when Mexico ceded control of Texas to the United States, Brownsville became a U.S.-controlled post under civilian rule. The town experienced significant growth during Reconstruction period (1868-1877), with advances in transportation and industry making it an important center for trade and commerce. However, following World War II Brownsvilles fortunes reversed: rapid population loss due to retiring soldiers and no new investment followed by declines in manufacturing and retail activity untilthe late 1990s when local businesses began resuscitating downtown areas with private funding The first settler in what is now Brownsville was José Antonio Luna who arrived on July 15th, 1836 with his family from Chihuahua City de los Reyes y la Laguna under Captán Rafael Montero Despaigne. On November 25th of that year they were joined by two other families: José Guerrero Canales and Vicente López de Ayala from Avila City; these families were also instrumental in founding Victoria (now Corpus Christi) which became their home port after arriving there on December 12th of that year aboard USS Constitution looking for land grants north of Santa Ana Bay where he could establish a more permanent community…. On January 11th, 1837 Francisco Pacheco purchased lands near present day Baylor University known as “El Caney”…. Many early settlers came ashore through Portugues Naval Squadron vessel HMS Dolphin which transported them overland across difficulty terrain including hilly country east of Brazoria River crossing Mud Creek at Palo Alto Pass then downriver past White Sands Beach before disembarking at El Caney Landing….. Captain James Fenton landed British forces at El Caney Landing on October 21st 1775 during Battle of New Braunfels Ridge during Mexican-American War.. From here Captain Fenton led troops towards San Antonio then turned northwest along Buffalo Branch Rivers to assist General Agustín de Alamo leading his cavalry charge against SpanishArmy entrenched at Sam Houston Ranch…Captain Fenton’s role has been often misinterpreted as marking only English presence within TX coastal region but it actually marks one stage in Texan history where foreigners played an integral role…Aftermath left behind extensive damage including 16 brick buildings destroyed or badly damaged…Today El Caney remains a popular tourist destination offering archaeological tours throughout Year round
The Brownsville area was first settled in the early 1800s by immigrants from Mexico. The name "Brownsville" is derived from a local post office, which was named for John Brown, an American Revolutionary War general. The area became a small town after Texas achieved statehood in 1845. In the late 1800s and into the1900s, Brownsville was a major shipping and manufacturing center for cotton crops and cattle. The city was known for its Spanish-speaking residents and their music halls that advertised nationally popular corridos ( Mexican ballads ).
