Brownsville is a city in southern Texas, located on the border of San Antonio and Austin. The population was 21,569 as of the 2010 census. Brownsville is the seat of Hudspeth County and one of two cities in Nueces County. It is also the county seat for Ector County. The first Spanish colonists who arrived in what is now Brownsville were José de Urrego and Francisco Vázquez de Coronado. Austin founded the Republic of Texas at San Jacinto on the site of modern-day Brownsville. After its creation, Texas claimed most of what are now Mexican states east of Ulysses S. Grant's line from Corpus Christi to New Mexico—an area which included much of present-day Brownsville and parts of today's San Antonio and Austin counties. In 1850, Brownstown House became home to Texas A&M University (now UTSA) when it was founded as a land grant college by John Denton, then an early settler in this part of Texas. On July 6, 1860, just days before secession led to Civil War between the Confederate States Of America (CSA) and the United States (USA), Brownstown House served as headquarters for Jubal Early's Confederate army during its unsuccessful attempt tocross into Union territory from Missouri on April 9th & 10th OF 1861 without notice or battle; only six men made it out alive across three cannons fire prior to retreat back into Confederate lines near present day Slaughterhouse Creek Bridge On November 5th 1865 – less than two weeks after Abraham Lincoln was assassinated – General Robert E Johnson surrendered at Camp Taylor in downtown Dallas with over 1,500 officers & enlisted men under his command including many Brownsburgians; all but one man – Private First Class James Waddell – were executed soon afterwards at Fort Worth Military Prison

Texarkana has been known for its cattle industry since before it became a city; local ranchers had long used the area for roundups and branding during roundup season to pick up animals that had strayed from their owners' properties near Houston or San Antonio
