The history of firearms in Brownsville began with the Spanish colonists who arrived in what is now Brownsville in 1836. Many Texans feared that this would lead to civil war between Mexicans and Texans if America became free, so many decided to stay behind while their families made their way back westward across the Rio Grande River. On November 5, 1836, during Texas Revolution against Mexico, Genovese CapturedTexan leader Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna at Sam Houston National Memorial Park south of town while being transported across town for trial on charges including treason against the new country Constitution adopted less than two weeks earlier. Santa Anna died over Christmas break with only minutes remaining when his guards surrounded him; local legend has it that he exclaimed "Quiero morir aquí" or "I want to die here". A plaque markingSanta Anna's death site can still be seen at Mission Concepcion Church northwest of town near Interstate 10 . In 1840s two men bynameso Waco City founder Robert Epps started a cattle business near present day Loop 610 East and I-10 . On July 6th 1851 Waco City residents elected James Bowie as Mayor after members removed incumbent Wiley Morehead

By 1912, almost all businesses had been closed down by prohibition so that residents could get work on the new railroad line running through town center; however, some reopened after repeal. In 1918, Brownsville participated in the Mexican Revolution during World War I when many American citizens did not support Mexico’s war effort against America’s allies Great Britain and France because they believed that Mexico would be victorious over these countries If it weren’t for America’s entry into World War I Cleveland resident J C Fields offered his services to lead local volunteers who traveled to Guerrero province to fight against Villa while Fields stayed back at home to provide food for his family In 1924 Brownsville voted 3-2 to become an independent city charter under City Manager Harry Laughlin Sr., becoming one of only two cities statewide with this feature during its early years In 1931 Laughlin resigned due to illness before he could implement mayoral powers within City Hall setting off several months long gun confiscation campaign initiated by Police Chief Sam Bowie In 1935 Bowie resigned effective February 1st following disclosures that he had taken bribes from developers seeking city contracts At age 36 Bowman became mayoralty candidate but lost to incumbent James Meeks
