Brownsville is a city in Starr County, Texas, United States. The population was 29,959 at the 2010 census. Brownsville is the second-largest city in Starr County and the 14th-largest city in Texas after Dallas. It is bordered by Laredo to the south and east, Midland to the north and west, and Odessa to the northwest. According to The Houston Chronicle's 2018 ranking of American cities based on population size, Brownsville had the 9th largest population in Texas. The paper also lists Brownsville as being one of "Houston's 10 most walkable neighborhoods." The name Brownsville comes from two Native Americans who lived there for many years: One man named Jim Crow (who may have been related to John Cranch) called it "Buccas" meaning "place where cotton grows." Another man named Tom Mix called it "Taco Point" because of its location at a point on Texoma Creek near what is now downtown Brownsville. In 1836 Mexican Captain Antonio Lopez Caballero sailed down Texoma Creek with his army seeking new land grants from Mexico City. He came across this creek while exploring some new territory claims that included what is now Brownsville. After landing on shore he ordered his troops not to search for any water but just drink from Texoma Creek which they did anyway, claiming that they were taking care of their horses and supplies! After Captn Lopez Caballero's army marched inland he discovered this area was very fertile so he decided to stay put and build a ranch here. He named it La Hacienda de los Reyes Tabascoes or Rancho Luna para las Mujeres or Rancho San José de la Trinidad for women because only white women could own land then in America (this designation stayed until after World War II when black women started owning property). This area eventually became known as Rancho Santa Fe de Nuevo Leon or simply Santa Fe because several settlements had been established there including San Fernando Rey del Rio which later became Pasadena; Peralta; Mission Vallejo; Victoria; El Paso; Monterrey; Socorro; Agustín de Asís y Monterey/Caboraína Tortuga Island State Park - all within less than 2 miles of each other! A plaque commemorating these early settlers can be found at Mission San Fernando Rey del Rio about 3 miles northeast of present day Brownsville off I-10 near Loop 610 East between Mesa Verde Parkway & Beltway 8.
