Brownsville was founded in 1836 by the surveyors John F. Brown and James K. Polk as an outpost on the Texas-Mexico border. In 1840, Brownsville became the capital of new Mexican province of Nuevo León. From here, Governor Antonio López de Santa Anna directed his forces against rebellious American colonists in what is known as The Texan Revolution. For two years (1846-48), Brownsville was the scene of intense fighting between Mexican forces and American insurgents before it finally capitulated under pressure from U.S. troops occupying Mexico City. Afterward, Brownsville slowly began to decline as a commercial center due to competition from more populous towns such as Austin and San Antonio. However, it remained an important cultural and political center until its demolition in the 1930s for lack of infrastructure replacement funds available at that time. Today, only a few vestiges of Brownsville’s past remain: a small museum located downtown; some remaining structures used by local businesses; and a handful of gravesites scattered throughout the cityscape

In 1865, Confederate General Braxton Bragg decided to fight what he thought were Mexican forces in the area. He ordered his troops to march into Brownsville and destroy whatever supplies or arms were there. This caused many people in the town to flee for their lives. As a result of this attack, Brownsville lost about 10% of its population within two months. After the war ended, most of the residents returned to live in Brownsville. However, some new developers began buying up land near the old city limits and started developing it into a large suburb called Mission Heights.
