Brownsville, Texas is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 1,711 as of 2010 and is the second most populous municipality in Austin County after Austin. The first European settlers in what is now Brownsville were French Canadian voyageurs who had come through Central America on their way to San Antonio de Bexar (present day Mexico City). They named their settlement "Bouvard" after Jean Bouvard, an explorer and cartographer who explored parts of Central America between 1768-1770. In 1836, Captain James Fenton commandeered two small vessels and sailed from Veracruz to Brownsville Bay seeking passage to Texas for cattle drives that would take him away from Mexican rule. He called his new settlement "Fenton's Fort". In 1839–40, José María López founded the village of San Fernando de Flores on the banks of the Rio Grande opposite Brownsville. Lopez’s town served as a terminus for stagecoaches coming down the Rio Grande from New Mexico and West Texas to Veracruz before continuing on to Acapulco or Havana via El Paso and Pueblo del Valle de García (now Ciudad Juárez). When American troops invaded Mexican territory during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), they burned all but one block of López’s town while he was still alive because he had refused military service against his own government. Lopez eventually moved his family northward into present day east Austin County where they founded what became known as Rancho Santa Fe de Carrillo Seco about 6 miles due northeast of modern Brownsville on October 10th 1849 by Juan Francisco Ocampo y Escobar under grants given by General Manuel Micheltorena to Buenaventura Baca y Pavón when he took possession of Alamo Hill following its fall on September 26th 1837 duringAntonio Menchaca’s campaign against Texan insurgents under Captain George Hogg
