Beginning in the 1870s, Brenham was home to a number of local scopes manufacturers. Some of these companies were located within the present-day city limits, while others were situated further out in rural areas. The majority of these manufacturers producedopes and other optical devices used for hunting and fishing. In addition, some of these companies also manufactured sporting optics, such as riflescopes and shotgunsights. During the early years of this century, Brenham was an important center for optics production because it had a large population and enough business opportunities to support several scoped manufactures. In 1892, the city fathers decided to move the entire production line of local optics manufacturing from downtown to new facilities on Elm Street. This decision helped ensure that Brenham would remain an important center for optical production until at least World War II. Additionally, during this time period, Brenham became home to one of the most important telescope manufacturers in Texas. This company was named “Brenham Telescope” and its products were distributed throughout many counties in Texas and even into Oklahoma.

After annexation by Dallas in 1907, Brenham grew rapidly due to its location on two railroads and its ability to serve as both an agricultural center and industry center for oil production in North Texas during World War II. The downtown business district became known as "The Third Avenue Mile" because it was home to many large businesses such as Texaco and Shell Oil Company before they moved out for other districts throughout Downtown Dallas during that time period. In recent years, Brenham has become an artsy enclave with several high-end restaurants and boutiques dotting its streetscapes; however, it remains one of the most vibrant cities withinDallas County.
Brenham was founded in 1836 by Capt. Edward P. Brenham and his brother, Maj. James A. Brenham. The Brenham brothers soon became major landowners in the area and built a small log cabin on the site of present-day Brenham High School. In 1853, they erected the first school building in what is now Texas. The Brenhams were also instrumental in bringing about the annexation of New Mexico by Texas in 1846.
