He placed second with 21 percent of the vote behind Dooley's 58 percent total but won $1 million in political contributions from business interests within his own camp which helped him win re-election four years later despite only carrying 1% of the total vote against Dooley's 99%. Brenham was founded in 1859 by citizens of nearby Springtown. The name comes from a grant from the US government to soften the name of an Indian village that had been destroyed by warfare between Texans and Comanche Indians. In 1865, John Crain built a trading post on what is now Court House Road just outside of Brenham. By 1870, Brenham had become established as a cattle and cotton marketing center due to its location within easy driving distance of ranching operations in surrounding counties. In 1876, William Hogg donated land to make way for a public school system in Hudspeth County. On July 8, 1907 (the date which remains commemorated as the anniversary of Hurricane Fabel), Hurricane Fabel made landfall near present-day La Grange while passing through central Hudspeth County; damage caused by this storm totaled $1 million ($ in 2017 dollars). In 1914, local businessmen organized what became known as "The Cowboy Club" to promote horsemanship and polo among ranch workers throughout the region. That same year saw the birth of world champion sprinter Jameson Garner in Brenham; Garner would later own and win three Olympics gold medals at 100 meters—a feat not accomplished by anyone else until 400 meters later that decade. In 1925–1926 (the first time that baseball was played regularly on American soil), Brenam hosted one game per week for six weeks during Texaco World Series (now known as MLB).
