In 1913, Brenham became the site of the first high school football game ever played between two schools within Texas when Lubbock hosted Centenary College (now Southern Methodist University). In 1920, Brenham hosted its second high school football game which pitted local High School No 1 against Centenary College (now SMU). This event is still remembered today as one of the most exciting college football matchups ever played with both teams coming out victorious 44-0! Today, Brenham continues to be home to many sports organizations including soccer, golf, tennis & basketball as well as several annual agricultural fairs that bring people together for a day of fun & camaraderie!

Brenham and his family and named after the nearby Bighorn Mountains. The Brenham post office opened in 1876 and served until it closed in 1914. The first store on the site of present-day Brenham was built by John C. Brenham and his brother Roy on Church Street in 1879. In 1886, John C.'s son George W. Brenham opened a general store on what is now Elm Street near the intersection of Commerce and Elm Streets. The business operated for over fifty years before being destroyed by fire in 1951. In 1907, JW&L Coal Company located a mine between Broadway Boulevard (now Loop 610) east of town and US Highway 90 north of town; this mine produced coal until 1964 when it shut down due to environmental concerns. In 1916, A&P grocery store opened on Market Square across from the local high school; this store served as the nucleus for future businesses within Town limits such as Texaco convenience stores which supplemented groceries during WWII (Texaco moved out of town shortly thereafter), Stroud's Pharmacy which became a national chain (the first one open inside an existing building), Brenham Masonic Temple which continues to serve as a meeting place today, Ford dealership until it closed its doors in 1984, H & R Block department store from 1978-1987 that replaced downtown's original anchors - First National Bank & Trust Company (now Wells Fargo) - before closing its doors permanently following bankruptcy proceedings; finally Kress Chevrolet/Jeep dealership from 1990-1994 that anchored MainStreet Shopping Center south of downtown just off I-635 south of US Highway 90).
