Brenham is a small town in Texas, located about 25 miles northwest of Austin. The population was 3,659 at the 2010 census. Brenham is the seat of McLennan County. The first time that I ever saw Brenham was when I was driving to Amarillo on my way to visit my family. I passed through it on my way and thought it looked like a pretty small town. After living in Austin for over 10 years, I realized that Brenham is actually quite large - much larger than any SmalltownUSA postcard would have you believe! Brenham has been around since the 1830s and began as a farming community known as Dutchman's Bend. In 1845, Englishman James Fenton founded a trading post here which he named Fort Fenton in honor of his friend and mentor, General Robert E. Lee. After American independence was won and the Mexican government becamerecognized, Fort Fenton became Mexico City de los Reyes (Mexico City). At its peak in 1875, Brenham had a population of over 4,000 people. However, by 1907 only 1 percent of the total population lived within five miles of downtown; most residents lived further away in rural areas or outside the city limits altogether! In 1925 John Witherspoon purchased land east of downtown from JW Goodrich & Son for $5 per acre (about $100 per square mile). This area now includes parts of downtown and are known as Witherspoon Square (named after him). Today many businesses – including Wells Fargo bank – can be found there including several restaurants and nightlife options!. Families who were once limited to operating their farms closeby started purchasing homes throughout downtown during this period too – making it an even more vibrant place today! One such example is Rawlings Sporting Goods store which relocated from its original location across Town Center Drive just two blocks north in 1987! It’s still one of our favorite local places to shop! What makes Brenham so unique? Well according to author Donny Hardesty “Just about everything: air quality, demographics (most residents are white), infrastructure (including some impressive freeway projects currently under construction)” Despite all these obstacles Mixed Use Development has become increasingly popular here with developers adding apartments, condos/rooms/apts., etc., onto existing buildings creating what amounts to an urban village complete with grocery stores,. banks,, movie theaters,, etc., right up against Main Street !!!!!
