The downtown area contains several large shopping malls including IHOP, JCPenney, Sears & Roebuck and Macy's among others along with several smaller businesses including banks (JPMorgan Chase & Co., Wells Fargo), car dealerships ( Nissan/Acura/Ford), restaurants (Ruby Tuesday's - first incarnation being opened by Fenton Burton in 1916), health clubs (Curtis Hogg Fitness Centers) and two churches - First Baptist Church which was built in 1925 and Second Baptist Church which was established in 1923. In addition to its central business district there are several neighborhoods located around downtown such as River Oaks which is home to many high-end shops such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus while Midtown offers more affordable options like Target and Sam's Club. Brenham is a city in Collin County, Texas, United States. The population was 8,812 at the 2010 census. Brenham is located on U.S. Highway 281 and State Highway 151 east of Waco. The city was named after Rear Admiral Samuel P. Brenham, who served as Commandant of the Marine Corps Reserve from 1929 to 1933 and as Adjutant General of Texas from 1935 to 1940. The first European settlers in present-day Brenham arrived in 1829 and platted the town site on November 6, 1830 following their exploration of what is now Collin County. A post office called Brenham was established in 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1865. In 1881, an oil well was drilled by John Wickersheimer near present-day downtown Brenham; this well led to the establishment of the nearby Houston–Galveston Railroad (later known as the Texas Pacific Railway). From its inception through World War II, Brenham functioned as a small farming community with few industrial or commercial enterprises other than agriculture until heavy industry began arriving during World War II due to munitions production at nearby Fort Worth Arsenal and shipping ports along I-45 north of town. After Little Rock Air Force Base closed down during the early 1970s and local jobs disappeared statewide due to new technology industries taking their place such as information technology companies such as Microsoft and Dell.; many residents decided to move away from then-borderless Interstate 45 for more centralized economic development opportunities within easy reach via television airwaves brought about by digital technologies offered by Austin TX’s KVUE TV station which became available when Phoenix AZ opened its Desert Springs Municipal Airport prospering under that name rather than being billed annually with “BrenHAM” like so much else around these parts
Brenham, Texas was founded in 1836 by pioneers. The town was named for General David Brenham and his wife, Anna. The Brenhams came from Kentucky and were the first white people to settle in what is now Brenham. They built a cabin on the edge of a prairie where they developed a small cattle ranch. In 1837, the Brenhams married another pioneer couple, James and Nancy Hodge. The Hodes bought land around Brenham and started building homes. By 1840, there were about 100 people living in Brenham.
