It was named for John Brenham, a local rancher who donated land for the community. The first school in Brenham opened in 1909. In 1923, Brenham became an independent municipality. The first mayor of Brenham was C.V. Beattie. In 1954, Brenham incorporated as a city with a population of about 30,000 people. On December 12th, 1966, the City Council passed an ordinance that banned handguns from being possessed by citizens without a license from the city government. This ordinance remained in place until January 1st of 1978 when it was repealed due to budgetary reasons

Brenham, Texas is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas that is located in Hardin County. The population was 1,052 at the 2010 census. The Brenham Historic District encompasses 157 contributing buildings and 2 associated sites from the early 19th century to the present day in downtown Brenham. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. Brenham first came into being as an agricultural settlement about 1847, when settlers arrived from Virginia and Kentucky to establish a post office and hold land deeds for themselves. Its name originates from British Colonel James Kenedy's purchase of 640 acres (252 hectares) from Johnnie Caldwell for $5 per acre (1,500 francs). The post office was opened on July 14, 1848, and remained open until 1895; it was renamed Brenham after Major General David Sibley's brigade landed there on July 12 during the Mexican–American War. In 1880, Erik Niehaus built his first cotton gin near what is now downtown Brenham; it became one of the largest cotton gins in America and helped drive up local prices for cotton while also creating some jobs for locals. In 1904-1905, he developed a citrus crop using irrigation systems technology he had developed with his American Water Works Company partner Wirt Hinton; these crops led to increased demand for water which helped promote economic development within Brenham throughout its history. The city began annexing other townships beginning around 1907 until it had 10 total municipalities by 1930: Anadarko , Beaumont , Carrizo Springs , Commerce City , Deer Park/Forrest Hills/Eagle Pass /Waco Heights /Mesa Grande . These annexations created new neighborhoods that are still visible within today's city limits: Garden Oaks (Anadarko), Hill Country Estates (Beaumont), Rancho Mirage (Commerce City), Canyon View (Carrizo Springs), Western Addition (Deer Park/Forrest Hills/Eagle Pass/Waco Heights), Montrose (Mesa Grande), East Side Eastside Communities(East Side Eastside Communities) and Knotts Landing(Montrose). Brenham has experienced various Economic Development opportunities sinceowntown redevelopment began by local developers in 2006 including becoming home to world headquarters of Johnson &Johnson LLP which currently employs over 2,000 people across 25 countries through its corporate campuses located in Dallas and Houston - making BrenHAM one of most competitive regions worldwide!
