Brenham, Texas is a small town located in the southeastern part of the state of Texas. The population was 8,733 at the 2010 census. It is home to two universities and one military base. Brenham also manufactures ammunition and firearms parts. The history of Brenham goes back to 1881 when it was founded as a post office by James Brady and Wm. Hance on what is now called Brady Street. Brady Street runs through the heart of Brenham and becomes George Street after passing through downtown. It originally served as a road connecting present-day Brenham with Houston, making it one of the earliest towns in Texas. In 1881, Brady street became an important thoroughfare for Commerce Boulevard which ran through town north-south before turning east and running parallel to I-10 just south of downtown along State Highway 6 (SH 6). Today, you can still see some evidence of Brady Street's role as a road during this time including four narrow stone lanes that bisects today's business district on either side of SH 6. A new post office was opened at 501 Neches Drive in 2009 after being vacant for eighteen years. Today, most of the businesses have been replaced by larger ones or closed down altogether due to competition from newer towns or cities within Kerr County such as Lewisville and Grand Prairie which have had much more growth over the past few decades than Brenham has been able to keep up with (due to its location on I-10). Some of the original businesses that remain include: Mr./Mrs.'s Store (operating since 1907), The Gilded Cage Theatre (opened 1905), The old Schoolhouse (1912), Mrs./Mr.'s Furniture Store (1918), The Old Smithy Shop/Garden Shed (1920), Mrs./Mr.'s Mercantile Depot/Lumberyard (1924), The Post Office Building/Georgia Arms Hotel/Bakery( 1925-1978), The First Baptist Church of Kernersville( 1913-2006) and many more!

Brenham was founded in 1867 by James W. Brenham and William H. Blount. It was named for James W. Brenham, who had come from Texas in 1849 and homesteaded the area around present-day Brenham. The town grew rapidly after it was established, and by 1880 it had a population of 1,500 people. In 1902, Brenham became an independent city and residents voted to annex the neighboring unincorporated community of Lamberton in order to create a larger town center. The annexation failed because of opposing bids from Lemberton's citizens and Brenham retains its separate identity today.
