Brenham has experienced several significant changes throughout its history: it lost its independence in 1907 to become an annexe toHouston; it was renamed Brennan after James A. Brennan, an early mayor ofHouston; it gained city status in 1959 when it merged with Iacoccaville; and it has undergone many updates since then including annexation by Sugar Land and a $35 million renovation project that began in 2006 and is scheduled to conclude in 2020. Today, Brenham is home to about 7,000 residents who are scattered across more than seventy businesses including several convenience stores/grocery stores as well as three theaters (The Colony Theatre Companyplex which opened on May 1st 2009 adjacent to Eagle Ford Speedway), two schools (John F Kennedy High School & Baylor University) as well as various other businesses providing services such as transportation or food services for locals and visitors alike including four churches serving both local congregations within walking distance of each other while also hosting events (Aquariums - West Side Park where you can see some very large fish - held open air concerts at night during August & September - ice cream socials at various locations around town). Brenham, Texas is a small town located in the northeastern part of the United States. The primary industry in Brenham today is farming, with some production of corn, cotton, wheat, and other crops. The population was 511 at the 2010 census. The first settlers to Brenham arrived in 1857 and started a farmstead on what would later be called East Main Street. By 1865, Brenham had developed into a small community with a school and store. In 1871, local entrepreneur John Waddell opened the first grocery store in Brenham when he purchased an old farmstead from David Aiken. Waddell ran the store until his death in 1928. In 1915, James Hickey opened a saddlery shop in Brenham that became one of the most successful businesses in town throughout its history. Hickey was also responsible for developing many of Brenham's downtown streetscape features including Front Street and Second Street. In 1919-1920, two brothers named Jocklin established a grocery store on West Third Street which would become one of the most popular stores in town during that period. The Store continued to operate until it closed around 1984 due to economic conditions. During this time period, muchofthe development around downtown happened north of First Street between Broadway and Elm Streets while south of FirstStreet between Elm and Locust Streets developed into what are now known as South Park Boulevard (east), Northwest Boulevard (west), and East Fourth Avenue (north). One important element which shaped these streetscape changes was the addition of several large parking lots near Interstate 10 just east of downtown which allowed for more commerce within minutes' walk from any business or commercial area inside city limits
Brenham was founded in 1839 by James W. Brenham and his brother, John A. Brenham. The town grew quickly, and soon had a population of over 100 people. In 1856, the Brenham Railway was built through the town, and it became an important transportation center for the area. The Brenham Mining Company was founded in 1865, and began producing coal and other minerals in the town. In 1892, a local watermill was built in Brenham, and it became one of the most important businesses in the town. In 1925, a new school building was built in Brenham, and it served as the primary educational institution for the town until 1978.
