Brenham is a small town in Texas, located in the Caldwell County seat of Brenham. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area. The townsite was laid out by John Sutherlin in 1872. Brenham is named after General James H. Brenham, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as a military governor of Texas. Brenham has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two centuries; they were either hunter-gatherers orFarmers who grew corn, beans, squash, and other crops on their land. In 1830s Spanish traders arrived in what is now Brenham and began trading with the local tribe of Lipan Indians. By 1840, settlers had arrived from Illinois and Missouri under the leadership of Captain Will Rogers and his friend Christopher Bullock. They built log homes that still stand today on what became known as Gadsden Street east of present day downtown Brenham (the old name for Main Street). By 1850 most of what is now downtown was developed along Gadsden Street where several stores including Jiffy Lube Kustom House still stand today - making it one of the earliest commercial areas in central Texas. In 1865 General James Hance led an expedition against San Antonio de Bexar Indian Chief Josefa Cabeza de Vaca y O’Higgins to gain control over some Rancho Grande property east of BrenHAM (later called White Sands Prairie). After skirmishes near San Antonio de Bexar on November 4th 1865 American forces retreated towards Austin when they discovered that there were more hostile Indians waiting for them than they could count! On December 1st 1865 General James Hance's force captured Joséfa Cabeza de Vaca y O’Higgins after her transportation through Mexico City had been arranged by Gen Pedro Rodriguez y Costilla with help from Santa Anna! After this event many Texans came to celebrate Ulysses S Grant's birthday at White Sands Prairie where Joséfa Cabeza de Vaca y O'Higginswine was held hostage until she could be sent back home! There are numerous stories about how Joséfa Cabeza De Vaca YO'Higgins met her death but no definitive evidence exists to support any claims that she died during these skirmishes or while being transported back to Mexico City; however such a story would make perfect sense if her life were threatened and she wantedTo avoid detection! The Battle of San Jacinto also took place nearby on October 17th 1836 which resulted in more deaths than weapons fired during the entire Texan Revolution! In 1896 A&P store owner/manager Addison Witherspoon donated land south Of Main Streets off US Highway 287 for use as a school district so students could not have to walk miles down Main Street each morning fetching lunch from A&P stores! This gave birth to Baylor University which currently occupies that site! On January 15th 1914 local resident Sam Houston set off fireworks across TX State line just east OF town limits when he mistakenly believed President Woodrow Wilson had ordered him not do so because WW1 was going badly for America!! As it turned out Wilson never ordered Sam Houston not to fire his rockets--he only asked him not to display them publicly!!
