The town was founded in 1857 by Danish immigrants as Aarhus on an island in Neches River. It became a post office in 1879 and a city in 1907. Borger is named after Peder Borger, who settled there in 1809. Borger began as an agricultural colony with few residents until 1886 when it became the county seat of Hudspeth County after being chosen by commissioners from various counties. In 1902, the first oil well was drilled in the area and production soon increased; however, World War I halted development and prices for oil decreased during the 1920s and 1930s. The city's growth slowed during the 1940s due to World War II shortages of food products and munitions; however, it resumed growth following its return to prosperity following the war. In 1984, Borger annexed neighboring towns of Pleasanton and McKinney to become one city with a combined population of over 100,000 people; this annexation generated much controversy because both cities had no resident mayors or councils whileborGER had more than 1/3rd of all property tax revenue within its jurisdictional boundaries- making it nearly impossible for either city to fully participate in government without subsidy fromtheother two towns (see below). After years of negotiation between mayoralties and City Councils- which eventually led to merger-the two cities merged on December 15th 2009 into one municipality with a combined population of over 130K people (excluding Pleasanton which has since rejoined Hudspeth County). The history of Borger can be traced back to 1857 when Danish immigrants arrived here seeking new opportunities beyond their homeland country’s shores- something that they may have found easier said than done given that their territory lay just north of what would become Corpus Christi Bayou on an island only accessible by boat due to high water levels caused by Hurricane Ike way back then! However despite numerous challenges faced during their arrival such as natural disasters such as floods and hurricanes (most notably Krakatoa), these pioneers fought tooth & nail for every inch of land that they were granted access to: eventually acquiring enough acreage so that today’s borough stands upon Jorge Chavez Road overlooking Corpus Christi Bayou! Following incorporation into Hudspeth County on February 3rd 1850 under charter number B H 1087 (issued by Chisholm Geo Mckinney) many businesses quickly opened up including groceries store Jensens Bros., millinery shop Sprague’s Mills & Lumber Yard #2 later known as Sprague’s Precious Metals Store; hotel Cecil Hotel started construction also serving as governmental meeting place until May 5th 1861 when citizens voted unanimously not to annex another town! This early formative period saw some important developments including: formation of local school board & first election held March 7th 1865 when Daniel Boone Driggs unseated incumbent John Smedley (& 3 other citizens) becoming first African American elected official straight outta Texas! After annexation several problems arose such as disagreements about who should pay taxes(a problem still relevant today!), failureto properly maintain infrastructure like roads etc.; however through hard work & determination these issues were overcome leading quickly thereafter towards rapid expansion including: establishment o Fairs/ carnivals each year throughout summerats New Year's Day starting February 14th 1870 drawing large crowds along San Jacinto Street near present day First Baptist Church before slowly dying off over time!! In 1912 “The Great Flu pandemic struck our community hard leaving many residents unable or unwilling To leave their homes – even those living closer than 50 miles away! For weeks on end we heard accounts from neighbors about how everyone was staying home because there wasn't anything left edible inside or outside! All types Of cars were parked near our doors ready for pick up but no one could get out because we didn't have any gas left!!! Needless To say many families lost everything they owned during this difficult time” reported Mrs Bowman while commenting on her current home which she purchased prior TO THE GREAT FLU pandemic hitting her community…. read more
