Borger, Texas is a small town located in the panhandle of Texas. It is home to The University of Texas at Austin and has a population of just over 10,000 residents. This small town was founded in 1876 by nine settlers who were looking for a place to raise crops and pasture their horses. The town grew rapidly, and by 1912 it had a population of over 30 people. Borger was originally named "Waco," but this name was changed in honor of General William Tecumseh Sherman when he visited the town in 1916. In 1938, the town name was again changed to Borger after Major General James A. Borger, Jr., who served as the Commander-in-Chief of United States Forces responsible for Southwest Asia during World War II. The current mayor is Arthur Vail and the town’s four-time incumbent mayor is Don Armstrong. It lies in the Gulf Coast region of the state and forms part of Corpus Christi metropolitan area. Borger is one of two towns in Clearwater County that remain unincorporated. The first settler in what is now Borger was Hercules Dyer, who arrived with his family on October 24, 1836. On January 1, 1837, Dyer married Sarah Snively and settled on a tract of land which he named after himself - "Hercules." In 1845, John Fritchard established a sawmill and gristmill near present-day Borger. The community name originated from Fritchard's occupation as an earlyborGERER ager (agent). On February 17, 1907, Clearwater County commissioners voted to name all of its municipalities by their original place names - "Pine Beach", "Fort Myers", "Clearwater" - except for Borger which would be called "Borger". At that time there were only six villages within the county: Pine Beach (later renamed Fort Myers), Clearwater Springs, Cedar Key Junction (Cedar Key), Dunedin Heights/Dundee Heights (Dunedin), Hialeah Gardens/Mallory Hills (Hialeah), and Spring Cove (Spring Cove). In 1915 James Peele set up his grocery store in what later became known as downtown Borger and began to grow the small town into a commercial center. In 1925 local farmers formed a cooperative to raise corn for local markets; this led to development of nearby Accord and Seaworld along I-10 just east of town limits. By 1930 over fifty businesses had opened along Main Street between Town Hall Square and Railroad Avenue while another dozen or so operated around Railroad Avenue north of I-10.
