Borger, Texas is a small town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. Borger is located on the Brazos River and is part of the El Paso–Juárez Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that would become Borger was first settled by Texans in 1836. In 1841, a post office was established in what is now Borger and it remained an active community until 1915 when it was annexed by El Paso. A railroad arrived in 1867 and soon after many businesses were opened along the tracks including a hotel which still stands today. The construction of dams along the Brazos river led to increased water levels which caused some homes to be flooded in 1927 and 1928; however, most of these damage had been repaired by then. In 1951, the El Paso-Juárez Metropolitan Statistical Area was created when it merged with other parts of Hidalgo County and Borger became part of its new jurisdiction. As time passed there were various attempts to move Borger closer to El Paso but problems arose with development near infrastructure already developed by those who wanted to build there instead of around town. Finally, in 2003 one such attempt came successful when plans were approved for a mixed-use development called "The Crossing" which would have included apartments, condos and shops on one side while rural land would be used for agriculture on the other side. However this project never materialized as developers pulled out after disagreements about how much space should be devoted to retail or residential uses within blocks that straddled two Interstate 5s
Borger was founded in 1873 by John A. Borger and James H. Fenton, two farmers from West Texas. The town grew quickly and soon had a population of around 100 people. In 1897, the town's first school was built and it continued to grow until it reached its current size of over 2,500 people. Borger has been a thriving community for many years, with no end in sight as development continues to take place within the boundaries of the town.
