Borger, Texas is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas, located in Gates County. The population was 1,814 at the 2000 census. Borger is part of the Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area and it is included in the Wichita Falls-based TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was named after General John Fenton Borger, who fought in the Mexican-American War and was wounded at Saltillo Creek. He later served as commissioner of public schools in Wichita Falls. In 1881, he donated land to make way for a school district and platted what would become Borger on that land. The first school on the site opened in 1886; it was called Pinto Prairie School until 1903 when a new school building was built and dedicated by President Cotton Mather Grant. It became known as Borger High School from 1907 until 1965 when it merged with Wichita Falls High School to form one large high school campus (now University Park High School). In 1909, George Wickersham bought 640 acres east of town for $15 per acre to create an agricultural center which he named Wickersham Air Force Base after his friend Colonel Edwin Epps Wickersham (the founder of Dallas Air Traffic Control). However, this airport only ever operated brush airstrips and never had any passengers or cargo handled; it closed its doors permanently in 1966 due tobudget restrictions within DoD during the Vietnam War era. Borger has seen some growth over time: In 1990, there were just over 100 residents; by 2000 that number had increased to 1,814 residents living within city limits while also comprising portions of Gates County outside city limits (Gates County had a population of 936 at that point). Borger, Texas is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 514 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. Borger was founded in 1879 by Danish immigrants Ole Borger and his wife Maren Rasmussen. In 1899, the town had 1 store, 2 hotels and 10 residents. In 1928, Borger post office opened with a mailing address of 129 High Street. By 1930, there were 16 residents and 3 businesses in the town. The population grew to 231 by 1940 but declined to 199 by 1950 due to World War II veterans' resettlement programs that sent many people away from rural areas. After the war ended, industry began coming to Borger and it experienced heavy growth until the early 1970s when businesses closed or moved out because of technological advances that made local production less expensive than those in larger cities such as Austin or Dallas. At its peak in 1979,borGER had a population of 476 according to the 1990 census; however this number has since decreased as many residents have left for other towns within Hudspeth County or been relocated outside of Borger altogether due to economic factors such as changesin energy prices and job opportunities within Hudspeth County itself In recent years there has been an effort underway by some members of BorGER's governing body (the board)to revive some aspects of its past including restoringhistoric buildings/grounds as wellas hosting cultural events that focus on traditional Americana like jujubeseed pie contests etc... although these initiatives still face challenges both financialand actual implementation due largelyto lackof interest on behalf of most citizens who feel they've seen better days for their town
